Sri Lanka

Roads, monsoon green, Indian Ocean light, and the wild spaces in between

May 2025Sri Lanka5.9735° N, 80.7718° E165 frames

Our first time in Sri Lanka. We did a full tour in 3-weeks, discovering everything this beautiful country has to offer. We absolutely loved it, the warm & sunny weather, the great food, the amazing landscapes and the animals. The scenery changed a lot during the 3 weeks from beaches, to paddy fields, jungles, plantations and old railways. The people and cultures are also quite different depending on where you are in the country, and you can really feel the difference as you travel. We were lucky to be there during a buddhist celebration, so we would cross paths with many people fully dressed in white, attending temples for celebrations and offering ice-cream and tea to people passing by.

The set of pictures below are classified by theme rather than the more usual location by location. Key themes are: The road, The coast, Inland, The stays, The fauna

Busy, hectic and tuk-tuks everywhere

Sri Lankan roads are quite something with traffic rules inexistent and everyone driving wherever they find the space. Tuk-tuks are omnipresent and drive like madmen. Yet the whole experience is worth it, the coast offers a nice drive from beach to beach, and as you move inland the traffic calms down and is replaced by lush nature and fauna.

Coconuts, palm trees and beaches.

We visited both the South-West coast and the North-East coast. In the South-West the rainy season was already there, so the ocean was already rough and surfing season was over. That coast is more smaller beaches often in bays or creeks. The North-East is where you can find larger sand beaches.

Everything turns green

Away from the coast, the scenery changes and gives way to wetlands and paddy fields, then climbs into tea country, forest and rock. Sri-Lankan forests are very lush and worth exploring.

The quiet hours

We found many great stays in Sri Lanka, very nicely decorated and at reasonable prices. A few frames from the nicest ones below.

Never quite alone

Sri Lanka has plenty of fauna to discover, and you don't necessarily have to go all the national parks to have nice encounters. Elephants, monkey and buffalos are often on the roads, you just have to drive slowly and watch around you. Safaris are also nice, especially to try and find the famous lepoard, which we were very lucky to see after a grueling afternoon in a Jeep driving around to find it.
